“Le sette porte” (The Seven Gates) is a site-specific public art light installation that reconstructs the possible journey of Mary and Joseph from Nazareth to Bethlehem, as recounted in the Gospel of Luke.
The cities along their path are represented without gates, inaccessible, recalling the beginning of the Gospel of John: He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him. The road that links them is an excerpt from a poem by Palestinian American poet George Abraham from their book BIRTHRIGHT, to whom I wish to extend my most heartfelt thanks for having entrusted me with their words.
George writes of constellations of hurricanes, expropriations, histories that repeat themselves, dissolutions, fractures, escaping from home. The work brings us to the “politics of expropriation, of fragmentation, of division of the Palestinian territory by the State of Israel,” as the Israeli journalist Hamira Hass puts it, a politics that intends to progressively suffocate and remove the Palestinian people from their land.
