Gorée

Workshop based installation.

Gorée is a photographic print on light silk. It shows the ocean’s horizon as viewed from the doorway of the Maison des Esclaves on the island of Gorée in Senegal. Slaves passed through this door to the ships bound for America.

The print hangs vertically in a space and it is constantly in motion, reacting to every movement happening in its surroundings. The work is composed of two pieces, and is a sort of large door the viewer passes through.

The work attempts to force the viewer to reflect on the role of Europeans as perpetrators of centuries of violence in Africa, seen as a land of conquest and fetish of the Western imagination.
