The dark night
of the soul

In the context of a three-act novel, movie, or play, the dark night of the soul is the moment when all seems lost and the protagonist must gather their strength in order to proceed.

The light sign, built using inexpensive strings of lights and cut, painted plywood, was installed in the middle of a path climbing the hill within the residency area of the Montalvo Art Center, encouraging the viewer to reflect on their own dark nights, grit their teeth, and arrive at the top of the hill.

Kan Ya Ma Kan

Once there was and once there was not: in Arabic, the sentence which begins fairy tales hangs in the balance between existence and non-existence: it is both these things together. The piece was conceived as a collaboration with writer Zeyn Joukhadar who, in his debut novel The Map of Salt and Stars, uses the sentence to start the fairy tale timeline of his book. The light sign introduced the show, which is named after the artwork.

ITALIA61

“Italia61” is the reconstruction of the logo of the international expo (Esposizione internazionale del lavoro) held in Turin on the occasion of the celebrations of the centenary of the unification of Italy in 1961. The inscription, originally located at the entrance of the Expo site, was rebuilt by hand as a light-up sign and suspended at the entrance to the Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo.
